Kuala Tanjung Port Pushed to Become a Logistics Gateway for Strategic Industrial Zones in North Sumatra

Medan, (22 September 2025) – PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) Regional 1, together with stakeholders, held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with the theme “Readiness of Kuala Tanjung Port in Supporting Industrial Growth in Sei Mangkei SEZ and Kuala Tanjung Industrial Zone.”

This FGD served as a strategic platform to strengthen synergy between the Port, industry players, and government in accelerating the development of the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Kuala Tanjung Industrial Zone, two key economic growth centers in North Sumatra.

The event was attended by the management of Pelindo and its subsidiaries, as well as representatives from several related institutions such as PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Regional I North Sumatra, Sei Mangkei SEZ Dry Port, ALFI North Sumatra, and Organda North Sumatra.

During the discussion, participants highlighted the crucial role of Kuala Tanjung Port as a modern logistics hub supporting industrial activities, goods distribution, and export-import in western Indonesia. The port’s existence is considered vital in strengthening national competitiveness and expanding international trade connectivity.

Pelindo expressed its commitment to ensuring infrastructure readiness, improving services, and strengthening cross-sector collaboration to create an integrated and sustainable industrial ecosystem.

“The Kuala Tanjung Industrial Zone is designed as a new economic growth center directly integrated with the Port. Through this FGD, we are encouraging more concrete collaboration among stakeholders so that infrastructure, logistics, and investment needs can be mapped and realized effectively,” said Mr. Sutanto, Acting Director of PT Prima Pengembangan Kawasan.

The FGD also produced several strategic recommendations, including improving port connectivity with industrial zones through rail and road links, accelerating investment in industrial support sectors, and aligning policies among institutions to speed up the development of the integrated industrial zone. With these steps, Kuala Tanjung Port is expected to become a key logistics hub on the west coast of Sumatra and a driving force for sustainable regional economic growth.
